E4 wins the Season Opener
The 2018 Season Opener for the Bierstadt E4 team saw many changes: a new league, a bigger field, a referee, a trip to Delkenheim and even a change in the weather as the heat of summer has finally given way to fall. But even through all the new, some things remain the same, the Bierstadt boys left the field victorious 6-2.

Dawn on game day saw overcast skies and a brisk wind, foretelling a tough task for the boys from Bierstadt. Sickness and injuries left the team shorthanded, with only 8 players able “answer the bell” as the starting whistle blew. The lineup saw a key defender from last year, Carter drawing the start in goal with defensive stalwart Louis joined by feisty veteran defender Sandro on the back line. Marvin manned the midfield, a midseason addition from last year whose hard work was rewarded with the team captainship for the week. He was joined by Birkan and Miles, who started their 4th season as teammates, promising a hardnosed chemistry that has been a trademark of this team from its inception. Leander rounded out the starting lineup at forward, last year’s leading scorer was eager to start the year off where he so often did last year, finding the back of the net. The lone reserve on the day, Sean was eager to join the fray. His calm passing and versatility was just what the team needed, allowing the coaches to shift players around the field to keep players fresh.

The opening kick brought an immediate attack as the front 5 briskly moved the ball down the field for a quick shot that just missed the mark, a foretelling theme of things to come. The Blue & Orange pressured the home team with tough defense and crisp passing through the middle, but couldn’t quite find the magic finish they desired. Birkan was finally able to crack the defense with the first goal. With the pressure on, the Bierstaders continued the assault with repeated attempts from far and near. Delkenheim was able to weather most of the storm, but finally Marvin was able to break through with the second goal.

Continued hard play was answered with strong defense in the last third by the home team as Bierstadt failed to capitalize on several opportunities. A mishap at the midfield and a quick counter, and Delkenheim was able to cut the lead to 2-1.  As the coaches rotated players behind him, Leander’s constant efforts and passing were finally rewarded when the forward drilled in the team’s third goal.  Neither team relented and it showed on the field with contested passes and hard tackles, but it was Deleknheim that closed the half with a score on another counter. A 3-2 score at the halftime whistle saw the team frustrated with the results of all their hard work.
The coaches, searching for answers, made changes that were previously successful in an early season friendly, adding Carter’s fresh legs to the pitch and replacing him in goal with Leander. Filling the hole in the front with Marvin. Carter, Birkan, Miles and Sean rotated in the midfield, continually generating the opportunities that usually result in goals. But the Delkenheim team and the goalie stood strong to the task. Carter was finally able to capitalize on a corner off the foot of Sandro, 4-2. Once again the versatility and selflessness of the team allowed the coaches to rotate Sandro and Louis to the attack, while Carter and Miles ensured the defense stayed stingy. The results were twofold. Louis’s strong leg was able to add a pair of goals that gave Bierstadt the win, and Leander was able to keep a clean sheet in the second half. The end result was a well-deserved victory and a great start to the 2018-19 season.
